Under the glowing lights and gentle musical drizzle at EMS Stadium, Kerala’s football faithful welcomed the second season of the Super League Kerala in style. For defending champions Calicut FC, it was an evening shaped by resilience and tactical discipline. Calicut FC showed resilience and tactical discipline. Meanwhile, an injury-time strike shattered Forca Kochi’s hopes and set the tone for another captivating campaign.
First Half: Early Penalty Sets the Stage
The contest started on a cautious note, with both Calicut FC and Forca Kochi feeling their way into the season’s opening exchanges. In the 14th minute, the match took its first dramatic turn. Calicut’s Riyas, darting in from the left wing, was tripped by Ajin inside the penalty area, earning a spot-kick. Colombian forward Sebastián Rincón Lukamic stepped up, calmly converting to score the first goal of Super League Kerala Season Two.

Forca Kochi responded by pushing men forward. Douglas Rosa and Nijo Gilbert both unleashed ambitious long-range efforts. However, Calicut’s defensive line stood strong. Kochi’s best chance of the half came at the half-hour mark. Rosa hesitated, which allowed a Calicut defender to make a crucial intervention. As the whistle sounded for half-time, Calicut led 1–0. Their discipline and defensive solidity were just enough to keep Kochi at bay.
Second Half: Kochi’s Fightback and Calicut’s Tactical Changes
After the break, Calicut FC introduced Jonathan Nahuel and Manoj to inject fresh energy. Meanwhile, Forca Kochi countered with their own substitutions. As a result, the game’s rhythm quickened, with both sides hunting for an opening. However, Calicut’s Riyas was forced off through injury and replaced by Jagannath. This momentarily unsettled the champions.
Kochi, sensing vulnerability, stepped up their assault. Nijo Gilbert, Kochi’s creative spark, curled in a cross on 65 minutes that Rosa nodded inches wide. As the pressure mounted, Calicut’s goalkeeper Hajmal produced a vital save, clawing away Gilbert’s curling free-kick destined for the top corner.
Late Drama: Forca Kochi Equalise, Calicut Respond
The closing stages delivered high drama. In the 88th minute, substitute Sangeeth Satheesh delivered a perfectly weighted cross, and Douglas Rosa rose above the defenders to head home the equaliser for Forca Kochi. With momentum shifting and the clock ticking down, Kochi’s travelling supporters believed the points would be shared.

But Calicut FC had one final twist to script. Deep into injury time, Prashanth Mohan surged down the right flank and whipped in a low cross. Arun Kumar, brought on as a substitute, timed his run perfectly and flicked the ball into the net, sealing a dramatic 2–1 victory for the home side. The stadium erupted in celebration as Arun was named Man of the Match for his decisive contribution.
Tactical Analysis: Flanks and Set-Pieces Shape the Contest
Calicut FC’s tactical plan was clear: stretch Kochi’s defence with pace on the wings and capitalise on set-piece opportunities. Their opening goal came from an aggressive run into the box and a coolly taken penalty. Forca Kochi, on the other hand, looked to the creative talents of Nijo Gilbert for inspiration, using crosses and set-plays as their primary attacking outlet.
Both sides made effective use of substitutions, with Kochi’s late changes forcing Calicut onto the defensive. Yet, it was Calicut’s own substitute, Arun Kumar, who ultimately proved the match-winner, underlining the importance of squad depth and tactical flexibility.
