Scam 2025? – Messi Saga: Argentina won’t play in Kerala

Kerala’s marquee football promise has shifted decisively. In late August, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) listed Kerala, India, alongside Luanda, Angola, for the 10–18 November window. By 24–25 October 2025, leading Argentine outlets reported a change of course: Argentina would train in Spain and play only Angola, with India off the itinerary. The pivot has placed a bright light on the claims, contracts and costs surrounding the “Messi Saga” in Kochi.

What changed, and what is on record

On 22 August 2025, the AFA named Kerala and Angola for the November window, noting that opponents were “to be defined.” Indian media widely carried that update, raising expectations of a historic night in Kochi. By mid-October, TyC Sports journalist Gastón Edul announced that the India date had fallen through and confirmed Angola. On 24 October, Argentine outlets reported that Argentina would camp in Spain and play only Angola in mid-November.

Kerala’s commercial partner maintained a different stance earlier in the month, insisting there was no official cancellation, floating 17 November for Kochi, and indicating ticketing would open in late October. Those assertions pre-dated the Angola-only updates and were not followed by a fresh AFA notice superseding the August line.

Money, stadium and public funds

Reporter Broadcasting MD Anto Augustine says he paid ₹130 crore to the AFA in June 2025 under an earlier agreement and will pursue legal action if the match does not happen. These are the organiser’s public claims reported by mainstream outlets; they have not released bank or SWIFT proof. Through October, reputable outlets reported ~₹70 crore in works at JLN Stadium, Kochi. The package covers lighting, seating, turf and regulatory compliance. The upgrades aim to meet top-level match standards. RTI reports show ~₹13 lakh spent on a September 2024 Spain visit. The sports minister and officials travelled. This contradicted earlier “no public funds” claims.

“The match in India was canceled. The match in Angola is confirmed.” – Gastón Edul, TyC Sports (15–16 Oct)
“There is no information on the cancellation… The Argentina ‘A’ team will visit Kerala.” – Anto Augustine (16 Oct)
“Argentina will visit Kerala in next windows” – Anto Augustine (25 Oct)

Timeline and key moments (2025)

  • 22 Aug: AFA website lists Kerala and Luanda for the November window (10–18).
  • 10–11 Oct: Reports highlight the Kochi renovation push; estimates at ~₹70 crore.
  • 15–16 Oct: TyC/Edul: India leg fell through; Angola confirmed.
  • 16 Oct: Kerala organiser signals no cancellation, indicates 17 Nov and ticketing window.
  • 24–25 Oct: Argentine coverage: camp in Spain, only Angola in November; India not visited.

Is it a scam 2025? Big money, bigger questions

As of 25 October 2025 (IST), credible Argentine reporting indicates Argentina will not play in Kerala in November, despite AFA’s August note that included Kerala. On record are an organiser’s ₹130-crore payment claim (without public proof), a ₹70-crore stadium programme reported across various outlets, and RTI-documented public spending on Spain outreach. Until the governing body or the contracting parties release updated official communications and documents, this remains a disputed deal, not a concluded event.
