India vs England Test: Shubman Gill’s Ton Headlines India’s Strong Start at Edgbaston

Birmingham, July 2 – The India vs England Test series continued in thrilling fashion as India posted a dominant 310 for 5 on the opening day of the second Test at Edgbaston. Leading from the front was captain Shubman Gill, who carved a brilliant 114 off 216 balls*, anchoring the innings and silencing doubts over India’s batting depth.

Fluent Jaiswal, Fluctuating First Session

India’s innings began with promise after being asked to bat first under overcast skies. Yashasvi Jaiswal, fresh off his explosive form in the first Test, launched a confident attack. His 87 off 107 deliveries was full of intent, punishing England’s pacers with crisp stroke play.

However, once Ben Stokes dismissed Jaiswal, the middle order stumbled. KL Rahul and debutant Nitish Reddy fell quickly, both to Chris Woakes, as England threatened to shift momentum their way.

Amid the mini-collapse, Shubman Gill batted with poise and class. Withstanding pressure from the seamers and navigating challenging periods, Gill crafted a masterclass in patience and precision. His strokeplay, especially through the covers, was a highlight of the day.

Gill’s century celebration was full of emotion—a roaring release that marked his second ton in as many matches. As wickets fell at the other end, his calmness held the innings together.

Jadeja Adds Backbone to Late Session

Partnering with Gill in the final session, Ravindra Jadeja played a crucial supporting role. His unbeaten 41 was tactically brilliant—defusing England’s attempts to use the second new ball and frustrating the bowlers with a mix of solid defense and clever rotation.

Their unbroken 99-run stand took India past 300 and left England with plenty to ponder heading into Day 2.

Bold Team India Selection Pays Off—So Far

India’s decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah and bring in Washington Sundar, Nitish Reddy, and Akash Deep drew surprise before the toss. But with a deep batting lineup delivering, the gamble appears to have paid off for now. Still, without Bumrah, India’s bowling unit will face a real test when England comes out to bat.

What’s Ahead on Day 2

India will aim to push their total beyond 450, with Gill and Jadeja set and lower-order batting depth available. England need early breakthroughs with the second new ball to avoid letting the match slip away early.
