IPL 2026 Retention List: Big Names Released and Bold Trades Set Stage for High-Stakes Auction
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

On a brisk November evening, the IPL narrative shifted from roaring stadiums to silent meeting rooms. The IPL 2026 retention list had finally been unveiled. Across ten franchises, old bonds were broken and futures redrawn. Bold decisions were made that will echo through the league long after this winter. This was no mere paperwork. It was a reset for a competition famed for its unpredictability.

By the end of deadline day, 173 players were retained, including 49 overseas. That left 77 slots and a record purse of ₹237.55 crore for the mini-auction in Abu Dhabi. For some teams, it is a chance to chase a new identity. For others, it is a warning that reputations no longer guarantee protection.

IPL 2026 Retention: The Numbers and the Narrative

The hard numbers hint at the drama to come. Kolkata Knight Riders lead the field with the largest purse at ₹64.30 crore and 13 slots to fill, a clear sign of sweeping change. Chennai Super Kings follow with ₹43.40 crore and nine vacancies, their most open hand in years. Mumbai Indians, in contrast, are almost fully formed, retaining a star-heavy core with just ₹2.75 crore left to spend.

The league’s balance has shifted. Teams have shown greater willingness to part ways with marquee names if performance lags, a trend visible in every squad’s decisions.

IPL 2026 Retention List: Shock Releases and Changing Fortunes

The most eye-catching aspect of the 2026 retention list is not just who stayed, but who departed.

  • Andre Russell (KKR): After more than a decade and two IPL titles, Russell’s exit symbolises the end of an era. His match-winning power and charisma remain unmatched, but declining form and persistent injuries prompted KKR to take a new direction.
  • Glenn Maxwell (PBKS) and Liam Livingstone (RCB): Both international stars are back in the auction pool after indifferent campaigns. Their release is a reminder that big contracts require consistent impact in a league growing less sentimental with each season.
  • Matheesha Pathirana (CSK): Once hailed as the heir to Malinga’s death-overs legacy, Pathirana’s release signals a tactical shift in Chennai’s bowling strategy.
  • Ravi Bishnoi (LSG): One of India’s most promising spinners, Bishnoi’s departure raised eyebrows. With Lucknow reshaping its attack, his release may yet become a talking point in auction rooms.

These decisions underline a harsh truth: in modern IPL, no player is undroppable.

IPL 2026 Trades: Jadeja–Samson Swap Redefines Strategies

While releases drew headlines, it was the trade window that reshaped the narrative.

In a move no one saw coming, Ravindra Jadeja joined Rajasthan Royals while Sanju Samson moved to Chennai Super Kings, with Sam Curran also joining Jadeja in Jaipur. This exchange changes the tactical DNA of both teams.

Jadeja called his Rajasthan return “a new challenge, but it feels like coming home.” For CSK, team director Kasi Viswanathan described letting go of Jadeja as “an emotional, cricket-first decision.” The Royals, meanwhile, now boast perhaps the most versatile all-round department in IPL history.

Elsewhere, Mohammed Shami moved to Lucknow Super Giants, adding teeth to their pace attack, while Nitish Rana shifted from Rajasthan to Delhi Capitals, giving DC a proven middle-order option. Trades involving Mayank Markande, Arjun Tendulkar and Shardul Thakur further highlight how franchises now treat trading as a core team-building tool, not a mere afterthought.

Team-by-team context: retentions, purse and the road ahead

Each team’s retention list reveals both intent and opportunity. The numbers – players retained, slots available and purse remaining – show how much room each franchise has to manoeuvre in Abu Dhabi.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK):
CSK have retained 16 players, leaving 9 slots to fill, including overseas options, with a healthy ₹43.40 crore still in the purse. It is a clear reset. By building the batting around Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson, they are likely to use that money on rebuilding their bowling core and targeting at least two high-impact overseas signings at the auction.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR):
KKR go into the mini-auction with the largest budget in the league. They have 12 players retained, 13 slots open and ₹64.30 crore to spend. With Andre Russell and Venkatesh Iyer released, they have deliberately created space to construct a new overseas nucleus. Expect aggressive bids for finishers and fast bowlers as they look to redefine the side.

Mumbai Indians (MI):
MI have retained 20 players, leaving only 5 slots and a modest ₹2.75 crore in the kitty. The core of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah remains intact, which means their auction will be about value picks and bench strength rather than marquee moves.

Rajasthan Royals (RR):
Royals have 16 retained players, 9 vacancies and ₹16.05 crore to work with. The arrivals of Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran give them a uniquely balanced XI, rich in all-round options. However, the departures of Sanju Samson and Nitish Rana leave a leadership question and a gap in the top order. Their remaining purse will be crucial in addressing those specific needs.

Delhi Capitals (DC):
Capitals go in with 17 players retained, 8 open slots and ₹21.80 crore available. A strong core of Axar Patel, KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav and Mitchell Starc gives them stability in both departments. With this base in place, they are well positioned to chase one or two high-impact overseas batters and add depth in pace.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG):
LSG have 19 retained players, leaving 6 slots and ₹22.95 crore in their purse. A new-look bowling attack led by Mohammed Shami and Mayank Yadav gives them serious pace, but they must now find ways to replace the experience of Ravi Bishnoi and David Miller. Their budget allows for at least one big purchase and a couple of targeted role players.

Punjab Kings (PBKS):
Punjab have retained 21 players, which means only 4 places are free, backed by ₹11.50 crore. A stable spine of Shreyas Iyer, Marcus Stoinis and Arshdeep Singh remains, while the release of Glenn Maxwell signals a move towards value over pure star power. With limited slots, PBKS are likely to focus on specialist roles rather than sweeping change.

Gujarat Titans (GT):
Titans also look settled, with 20 players retained, 5 slots open and ₹12.90 crore in reserve. Their core still revolves around Shubman Gill, Rashid Khan and Jos Buttler, supported by a solid group of Indian role players. Minimal churn suggests they will use the auction to fine-tune rather than overhaul.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH):
SRH head to the auction with 15 retained players, 10 vacancies and a strong ₹25.50 crore purse. They have kept the spine of Pat Cummins, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, while overhauling parts of the bowling after Mohammed Shami’s departure. With so many slots and a sizeable budget, they could be one of the most active teams in Abu Dhabi.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB):
RCB, fresh from a long-awaited title, have 17 players retained, 8 slots to fill and ₹16.40 crore remaining. They keep Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar and Josh Hazlewood, choosing evolution over revolution. Their focus now will be on adding one more impact overseas player and shoring up bowling depth without disturbing a settled core.

Key Trends: What the IPL 2026 Retention List Reveals

Indian Batting Cores are Non-Negotiable

Across teams, top Indian batters remain untouchable—Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal are all retained. The message: true quality at the top is irreplaceable in Indian conditions.

All-Rounders Still Rule the Market

Jadeja and Curran’s high-value trades show all-rounders remain central to IPL tactics. Yet, with Russell, Maxwell and Livingstone released, the bar for performance is higher than ever.

Trades Are the New Game-Changer

This cycle marks a cultural shift—teams now use trades not just to fill holes but to completely overhaul their XI’s strategy, bringing IPL closer to global franchise models.

Mini-Auction, Mega Stakes

With only 77 slots open, the auction will be sharp and fiercely contested. KKR and CSK hold the power to transform the season with a single bold move. For others, success may depend on shrewd late picks and finding value under pressure.

As the auction in Abu Dhabi approaches, the real IPL contest is only just beginning. For every player and fan, retention day has set the stage for a season that promises drama, surprise and perhaps a few new heroes under the lights.
